Christian Ortiz > Lines

I recently had to take an emergency trip down to Mexico. I was really not in the mood to take pictures but it is now second nature to bring my camera everywhere I go, so I had it on me when I was watching the sunset from the rooftop of a house from my youth. I had quietly sneaked away to be alone for a while and watch the day finally come to a rest. My vantage point was far from beautiful with the crisscross of power lines dividing the sky into rectangles, almost as if I were watching the sky change color from behind an enclosure, but it felt right and it felt like home.

Christian Ortiz > Farmer Ruins My World View
(Longsheng Rice Terraces)
I came across many rural farmers while traveling through the Longsheng (Dazhai ) rice terraces in China who have been working the land and eking out a living like countless generations before them had. I remember that I had woken up stupid early to squeeze in as much photography time on my last day here. I woke up and dressed in the dark and stepped out to the cold morning chill only to find my little friend standing outside my hotel, waiting for me to start the day. This little kid had taken to me and was determined to be my shadow. We floated in and out of temporary unoccupied houses while the owners were out farming. About mid-morning, we took a break and sat down to watch the rice farmers do their thing.

As I watched this old farmer till the land with this trusty horsie I began to wondered what their life would be like if they had access to modern day technology – would their lives be easier? Perhaps technology would deconstruct their way of life, making it no longer useful or relevant? I was lost in my own head thinking about the ramifications when all of the sudden the nice farmer stops pushing the horsie, reached in his pocket and pulled out a cell phone. He proceeded to have a chat with the person on the other end as I stared in complete disbelief. For all I knew he was talking to his trader to buy stock in Apple before the next iPhone launch. Even the horse was acting like this is a completely natural. Sheesh … way to ruin my world view rice farmer.

Christian Ortiz > The Rushing Foam

It is cold outside so I thought I would share a nice beach picture to warm up the mood. However, do not be fooled - this was taken in 30 mile an hour winds in the frigid San Gregorio Beach. It was one of those times where your body temperature drops so quickly that your body goes from cold to numb and you experience complete lack of corporal identity. You know you have a body but the only way you can really tell is because you can still get around from place to place with the jerky movements of a frozen ant.

The wind was blowing so fast that it pushed the sea foam up the shore in a mad rush. I stood there for about half an hour (my body was numb anyway so I might as well) and let the foam smash into me, leaving interesting patterns on my clothing. It felt a bit like the apocalypse was coming and the deafening sound of the wind helped to create a feeling of utter isolation. It was a really fun experience, but then again, I am into that crazy stuff.
